Located in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, Watsons Bay is an ideal spot to enjoy a scenic walk around South Head, swim in the harbour at Camp Cove, and have lunch overlooking Sydney Harbour.
Getting there
Head to Circular Quay and ride the ferry to Watsons Bay. The ferry ride takes approximately 20 minutes. Don’t forget your Opal card!
What to do
From the ferry wharf take a left at the beach and head along Marine Parade. Continue on through the residential streets of Watsons Bay, and you’ll soon reach Camp Cove.
The beauty and bounty of this bay has been long recognised. Aboriginal people camped and fished in this area of the harbour. And when European settlers entered what is now known as Sydney Harbour in 1788, they spent a night at Camp Cove before travelling on to Sydney Cove.
Today the scenic harbourside beach is a favourite spot to people from near and far seeking a fun day out in the sunshine. If you’re up for a swim while visiting Watsons Bay, this is the perfect place to enjoy a dip.
Beyond Camp Cove you’ll find the South Head Heritage Trail, a looped walking track around the South Head peninsula at the entrance to Sydney Harbour.
As you walk around South Head, you’ll enjoy views back towards the Sydney city skyline, across the entrance of the harbour to North Head, and out to sea.
Passing former military emplacements (and the current day HMAS Watson), Hornby Lighthouse, and the historic Lightkeeper’s Cottage, the South Head Heritage Trail combines history and epic harbour views.
Alongside the walking path you’ll find plenty of benches and grassy areas to sit and take in the views.
And if you’re feeling bold enough to experience one of Sydney’s nude beaches, the trail also passes by Lady Bay Beach, where nude bathing is legally permitted. Don’t forget your sunscreen!
What to eat and drink
Before heading back to the city, enjoy a spritz under the striped umbrellas at Watsons Bay Hotel. It’s at the end of the ferry wharf and has views across the harbour.
If you’re after something to eat, there’s a great menu of shareable snacks and more substantial meals at the Watsons Bay Hotel.
Alternatively, you can pick up fish and chips at Doyles, a Watsons Bay institution. Dine al la carte with table service at Doyles on the Beach (on Marine Parade next to Watsons Bay Hotel), or get takeout at the nearby Doyles Fishermans Wharf and enjoy it under the shade in nearby Robertson Park.
